If you’re looking to add a touch of elegance and a whole lot of personality to your backyard flock, the Lavender Orpington is an absolute must-have. I like to think of them as the golden retrievers of the chicken world—just with fabulous, fluffy, silvery-blue feathers! They are one of the most docile, sweet-natured breeds out there, and I absolutely love having them around the farm. Whether you are a first-time chicken keeper or a seasoned pro looking for a friendly companion, this hen is ready to waddle right into your heart.
The Fluff and the Fabulous
The Lavender Orpington (often called “Self-Blue”) is a large, heavy breed with plumage so thick and soft they look like walking clouds. That gorgeous, pale silvery-blue color is a true showstopper in any green yard. Because of their size and abundant fluff, they don’t fly well, making them easy to keep contained with standard fencing.
Sweet, Docile Temperament
If you want a “lap chicken,” this is your girl. Orpingtons are famous for being exceptionally calm, friendly, and great with kids. They don’t mind being picked up, carried around, or just hanging out nearby while you do yard work. They get along well with other flock members, though their gentle nature means they are usually near the bottom of the pecking order—so I always recommend keeping an eye on them if you have more aggressive breeds in your coop.
Egg Production & Mothering
While they are stunning to look at, they definitely pull their weight in the nesting box!
- Egg Color: Beautiful, light to medium brown.
- Egg Size: Large.
- Laying Rate: You can expect roughly 200 to 250 eggs per year from a healthy hen (about 4–5 eggs a week).
- Broodiness: Orpingtons have a strong tendency to go broody. If you ever want to hatch your own chicks, these hens make spectacular, fiercely protective mothers. If not, they are easy enough to gently break from their broody spells.
Built for the Seasons
Thanks to all those dense, fluffy feathers, Lavender Orpingtons are incredibly cold-hardy. They handle our chilly New England winters like absolute champs. During the hot summer months, just make sure she has plenty of deep shade and cool water, as that thick winter coat can make her a bit warm.
