The Black Copper Marans: The Chocolate Egg Queen

The Backstory (The Fancy Part)

Originating from the historic French port town of Marans (Fun fact: the breed name always ends in an “s” even when singular, because it’s named after the town!), these birds are the absolute definition of poultry luxury. Here is a little more trivia to impress your friends: James Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming, famously wrote that 007 would only eat Marans eggs for breakfast. If they are good enough for an international spy, I promise they are good enough for your backyard!

The Personality (The Vibe)

They carry themselves with a sort of quiet, confident French elegance. Black Copper Marans are docile, calm, and generally very peaceful birds. While they might not be the first to aggressively demand lap time, they are fantastic, active foragers who love to patrol the yard for bugs. They go about their business with zero drama and get along beautifully in a mixed flock.

The Look & The Goods

You are getting these for the “wow” factor, and they absolutely deliver.

  • The Look: They sport sleek black feathers with a gorgeous iridescent beetle-green sheen, topped off with brilliant, fiery copper feathers around their necks. Oh, and they have lightly feathered legs—because who doesn’t love a chicken wearing fancy pants?
  • The Eggs: This is the main event! They lay the most incredible, rich, dark chocolate brown eggs.
  • Production: You can expect about 150–200 eggs a year. They put all their energy into crafting that insanely dark pigment, so they trade a little bit of volume for maximum color impact.

Why You Need Them

If you are trying to build the ultimate “rainbow egg basket,” I always say you absolutely need a dark chocolate egg to anchor the colors. They are striking to look at, easy to care for, and give you bragging rights every time you open an egg carton.
