BRING BOXES OR CRATES
- Boxes are available for $5 each for chicks or 2 pullets.
- 2-3 month old pullets are usually the size of a grape fruit. A cat crate is ideal.
- Birds under 2 weeks old are usually about the size of a skinny baseball. A small box is ideal, not a crate. Chicks need to be kept warm on the ride home.
FRESH CHICKS NEED TO BE WARM.
AT 8 WEEKS OLD BIRDS DO NOT NEED TO BE KEPT WARM.
- Fresh chicks need a brooder temperature at 95°F and should be fed a chick starter feed until 8 weeks old.
- At 4 weeks old birds are moved out to a coop without heat but I still make sure they go in the coop at night or on chilly days.
- A healthy fully feathered 8 week old bird should be able to handle snow. As in if it gets snowed on, it should just fluff it off and be dry and fine. If you have not already, they should definitely no longer be provided heat as it can mess with their natural thermoregulation abilities. At this age they are also switched to a chick grower crumble until they start laying or are closer to 6 months old.
